What is Faith? - written by Rev. Maxie Anderson

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1 NASB). The writer of the Book of Hebrews begins this chapter with this definition of faith. Faith is also believing that the Word of God is true. What God says in His Word can be trusted and likewise are His promises. As believers we conduct our lives with confidence and in obedience to God’s Word and consequently, our faith increases.  As you increase your faith, consider the following:

• Establish a quiet place where you can be alone. Develop a dedicated time daily to worship God via song, prayer, and thanksgiving.

• Determine a dedicated time daily to read the Bible and meditate on what was read.

• Keep a journal of Bible passages that are particularly meaningful to you.

• Attend weekly worship service and attend Bible study.

• Participate in Life Groups.

Stay encouraged as you read the following Scriptures from the NASB:

• Mark 1:35 - "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

• Matthew 22:29 – “But Jesus answered and said to them, ‘You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.’ ”

• Matthew 6:6 - “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

• Hebrews 10:24-25 - “and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”

• Luke 4:16 - “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read.”
