The "W's" of Prayer
The “W’s” of Prayer - written by Rev. Maxie Anderson
Many people in the faith ask questions about prayer that includes what is prayer, where to pray, when to pray, and why pray? Consider the following:
What is prayer? Prayer is the believers’ relational communication with God. It is our attempt to bring heaven’s perspective into our lives.
Where to pray? We can pray anywhere. God commands for us to pray in a place where it's just you and God. Jesus gave instructions on where to pray in Matthew 6:6, “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
When to pray? We can always pray at any time as needed. We should seek God early in the morning and throughout the day. In his gospel, Mark records that Jesus prayed early in the morning, while it was still dark, and in a secluded space (Mark 1:35). 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray without ceasing.”
Why pray? Prayer affords us the opportunity to know what the will of God is for us. We also pray because there are times when we need God’s comfort. In addition, we pray for the needs of others. 2 Chronicles 7:14 states, “and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-14) also gives reason to pray including forgiveness, provision, and protection. In Matthew 7:7 Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find, knock, and it will be opened to you.” Jesus commands us to pray.
